Our scientists are leaders in the fields of surficial geology and geomorphology. Terrain stability mapping, surficial geology mapping and constraints mapping are just a few of the things we do. These types of maps are used for choosing the locations of pipelines, roads, transmission lines, wind turbines and other types of infrastructure, and are also commonly used for environmental assessments, municipal issues, and for forestry, mining engineering and mineral exploration purposes.
Jacques Whitford AXYS Ltd. has specialists skilled in the following areas:
- Terrain mapping
- Terrain stability mapping
- Surficial geology mapping
- Bioterrain mapping for TEM (Terrestrial Ecosystem Mapping)
- Route selection
- Till geochemistry and ice flow mapping
- Constraints mapping
- Geohazards mapping
- Aggregate resource potential mapping
- Analysis of landslide activity levels
Our geomorphologists have worked all over Canada and are familiar with the types of deposits found in different regions. They also have experience in northern and other remote locations.
We use the cutting edge HD-MAPP (High Definition Mapping and APPlications) system for mapping. Medium and small-scale aerial photographs (e.g.,1:60 000, 1:40 000) are viewed in 3D on a computer monitor and the HD-MAPP system allows the mappers to zoom down to scales as large as 1:2000. Viewing imagery in 3D at scales of 1:10 000 to 1:30 000 and digitizing directly into HD-MAPP results in faster, more accurate mapping. The same mapping system allows our scientists to combine data sets, including remotely sensed imagery (some of which is available in 3D) and LIDAR (LIght Ranging and Detection imagery), enabling even better analysis of the data.
